lyrics

When the circus came to town, all the kids went giddy with glee
But the adults had their doubts and they wanted the circus to leave
They said that the ringmaster looked like a pederast bum
And the acrobats they were heard talking in a foreign tongue

When the circus came to town no one was more thrilled than Anne
As wild as they come she was best friend I ever had
The tickets were expensive and her mom wouldn't lend her a cent
But Anne found a tear in the tarp and we snuck inside the tent

The ringmaster waltzed with his blind three-legged greyhound
While the acrobats up in the air spun around and around
And when they all came out to take their final bow
Me and Anne we blessed the day that the circus came to town

In the morning the circus was gone and so was Anne
Her mother went a little bit crazy she couldn't understand
In a week or so I got a letter and it was from Anne
And I read these words out loud to make sure I understand

"I'm gonna miss you, you'll always be my best friend
It pains me to think I won't see you maybe ever again
But I know that you know all my reasons, so I won’t write them down
Just please think of me everytime the circus comes to town"

A year passed by and her parents never spoke her name
When the circus returned they went looking for her in vain
Sitting in the tent they caught the ringmaster’s eye
He invited them back to his trailer for some (late-night) tea and pie

And they talked all night, they talked 'til the morning come
While the acrobats they sang a sad foreign song
Everyone in camp heard Anne's mother wailing out loud
Accompanied by that old blind three-legged greyhound

Another year passed and still they don’t speak her name
But looking at her parents you can see that something has changed
In the evenings they sit in the park and watch the sun go down
Maybe dreaming about the day that the circus comes back to town
