The headlights from the oncoming cars shine a light in your eyes
We ain’t been talking for miles and miles and miles
You keep your eyes open for the right exit sign
I’m counting the roadkill just to pass the time
Every year the same old scene
The whole family gathers round the tree
for those pictures of home

My dad takes our coats, Mom hugs you so hard you can’t breathe
She looks at your belly in hopes that there’s something to see
You put on a smile but you’re grinding your teeth
I’m standing there staring down at my feet
She’s a grandma with no grandkids
It’s the only thing that’s amiss
In these pictures of home

We try our best
To survive this test
Of getting from one happy snapshot to the next
And when we’re young it’s all in good fun
But the older we get the more we regret
Mom’s got us under one roof
So Dad shoots a film full of proof

At dinner we’re seated with my cousin’s twins, they just turned three
She just got divorced, now she’s taking a course in tai chi
The camcorders’s ready and the kids have to sing
Dad’s taping it over their poor mother’s wedding
Mom turns down the radio
And the kids really put on a show
for those picture of home

And so it goes
Thess pictures of home
Get taken again and again and again
And when it’s done we’re all on the run
And Dad retires to drink in his den
After everyone’s gone
Mom lingers in the kitchen alone
with those pictures of home
